City Creek Water Treatment Plant

Project Overview
The City Creek Water Treatment Plant (CCWTP) was the first municipal water treatment plant built in the State of Utah. Originally designed in 1953 and brought online in 1955, the plant has been an integral component of Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities’ (SLCDPU) drinking water supply for over 65 years. Aged infrastructure has resulted in several structural and mechanical deficiencies that must be addressed to restore the resiliency and reliability needed for this critical water supply.
As part of the decision that upgrades needed to be made to the treatment plant, it was determined that the plant would be rebuilt in phases and rolled out into separate construction packages or steps. Rebuilding in phases allows the plant to continue to treat water during the design and construction processes. See the project schedule below.

Upcoming Retaining Wall Project
As part of Step 1, the existing retaining wall within the fenced property will be replaced. This project is scheduled to begin work in late March/early April 2022 and will be complete before the Memorial Day weekend, May 27, 2022. Additional project timeframe specifics will be shared as they become available.
We anticipate very little disruption to canyon users as this project takes place. Canyon users can expect additional truck traffic, limited road closures for heavy equipment, and additional noise, dust, and vibration.

Survey Results
Thank You For Participating
In December and January a survey was distributed to area residents in the Greater Avenues and Capitol Hill communities as well as to weekend recreation users in order to collect public feedback regarding the CCWTP upgrades and gauge public awareness of the watershed. We received over 300 survey responses and some important feedback from the respondents.
Here are some of the things you told us you valued most about City Creek Canyon:
Beautiful scenery
Accessibility and proximity to the city
Wildlife
Recreation opportunities
These are the concerns we will be addressing in regards to the plant upgrade project:
Access
Pollution
Water quality
We anticipate more opportunities for public feedback and participation in the future!
